On this tour, you will follow in the tracks of the famous inventor of printing with moveable type, with a visit to the Gutenberg Museum and a demonstration of printing. A glimpse at the development of the media from the Middle Ages until today.

Churches in Mainz

For the past 1000 years, St. Martins Cathedral has been a characteristic feature of the Mainz cityscape. One of the main attractions is St. Mary’s alter in Ketteler Chapel. A short walk takes you to St. Stephan’s. This church, located high above the city, houses the only ecclesiastical windows by Marc Chagall in Germany. Just another few steps away, you will find the Church of the Augustines, one of three impressive Baroque churches in Mainz.

Moguntiacum - a Roman city

A tour of the city in search of traces of the Romans will take you to the Museum of Ancient Shipping. Here you will find warships dating back to late antiquity that were found during construction work in the centre of Mainz and during the excavation of the Roman theatre. You will go on from there to the Drususstein, a unique Roman monument that was once a landmark visible from afar, and then to the Roman gate on the Kästrich hill.
